Jahrhundert soll im Gebiet von Neuwerk durch Mönche des Klosters Michaelstein "Marmel" abgebaut worden sein. Ein Indiz dafür sind verschiedene, aus "Marmor" hergestellte, mittelalterliche Taufsteine.“
