Hunan ist eine Provinz in der Volksrepublik China. Hunan liegt am Mittellauf des Jangtse. Die Hauptstadt der Provinz ist Changsha.
Der Name der Provinz stammt daher, dass Hunan südlich des Donting-Sees liegt (Hu = See, Nan = Süden). Schon seit der Yuan- und Ming-Dynastie.
Die vier bekanntesten Gruben sind wohl die Yao Gang Xian Mine, Shangbao Mine, Xianghuapu Mine und die Xianghualing Mine.
