Detailed Description

Tibet ist ein ausgedehntes Hochland in Zentralasien.

Die Bezeichnung Tibet wird heute sowohl für das gesamte tibetische Hochland verwendet als auch für das Autonome Gebiet Tibet, die 1965 gegründete Verwaltungseinheit der Volksrepublik China. Das Autonome Gebiet Tibet umfasst etwa die Hälfte des tibetischen Kulturraums und liegt im S Tibets. Die N und O Teile des tibetischen Kulturraums sind Teil der chinesischen Provinzen Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan und Yunnan. Im offiziellen chinesischen Sprachgebrauch steht der Begriff Tibet (d.h. das chinesische Xīzàng 西藏, tibetisch bod ljongs བོད་ལྗོངས།) immer für das Autonome Gebiet Tibet. Auch der tibetische Begriff bod bzw. bod yul schließt die O-tibetischen Regionen Amdo und Kham, also die überwiegend außerhalb des Autonomen Gebiets Tibet gelegenen Gebiete, üblicherweise nicht mit ein. Um mitgerechnet zu werden, muss im Tibetischen bod chen (= „Groß-Tibet“) gebraucht werden.
