Ausführliche Beschreibung

Die Conodonten waren lanzettförmige Freiwasserbewohner. Der Körper war seitlich abgeflacht und besaß eine asymmetrische Schwanzflosse am Körperende. Sie waren meistens nur wenige Zentimeter lang, die längsten Tiere erreichten wahrscheinlich Körperlängen bis 40 Zentimeter. Der Körper wurde in seiner gesamten Länge von einer Chorda dorsalis durchzogen und bestand im Wesentlichen aus V-förmigen Muskelelementen, den Myomeren. Der Kopf trug am Vorderende zwei große seitwärts blickende Augen sowie unterseits einen Mundtrichter, der als Conodonten-Apparat bezeichnet wird. Der Conodonten-Apparat wurde von den zahnähnlichen Strukturen, den Conodonten-Elementen, gebildet.
