Ausführliche Beschreibung

Die Gattung Mosasaurus ("Maasechse") war namensgebend für die Mosasauridae (Mosasaurier), eine Familie großer Meeresechsen aus der Oberkreide, die hochgradig an eine aquatische Lebensweise angepasst waren. Mosasaurus war einer der letzten, am weitesten entwickelten und zugleich größten Mosasaurier.

Holotyp ist der Schädel NMHN AC. 9648, dieser wurde etwa 1770 in der Nähe von Maastricht gefunden
