Der Name "Bixbyit" wird eine Serienbezeichnung für Materialien mit einer Bixbyit-Struktur, Raumgruppe Ia3 und Fe3+ oder Mn3+ als dominierendes dreiwertiges Kation (dies schließt auch den orthorhombische Polytype von Mn2O3 mit der Raumgruppe Pcab). Bixbyit-(Fe) ist definiert als der Fe3+-dominante Teil der Reihe, mit der Idealformel (Fe,Mn)2O3, und Bixbyit-(Mn) ist definiert als der Mn3+-dominante Teil der Reihe mit der Idealformel Mn2O3. [1]
