Das Mineral wird "Orlovit" benannt um den bekannten russischen Mineraloge, Dr. der Mineralogie Yury Leonidivich Orlov (1926-1980), Direktor (1976-1980) des A. E. Fersman Mineralogische Museum zu ehren. Er war Spezialist in der Mineralogie von Diamanten und Edelsteine und Autor von mehr als 50 Werken, darunter die klassischen Monographien "Mineralogie von Diamanten" und "Morphologie der Diamanten".
