Deutlich ausgebildete Kristalle sind bekannt von Magnet Cove in Arkansas sowie von Afrikanda auf der Halbinsel Kola, Russland.

Additional Information

Schorlomit ist ein eigenständiges, selbständiges, von der IMA anerkanntes Mineral der Granatstrukturgruppe mit der chemischen Formel Ca3(Ti,Fe3+)2((Si,Fe3+)O4)3.

Authentische, echte Schorlomite werden i.d.R. in melanokraten Gesteinen wie Pyroxenen gebildet, vor allem in Erz-Pyroxeniten in ultrabasischen alkalischen Massiven wie Magnet Cove in Arkansas oder Afrikanda auf der Kola-Halbinsel in Russland.

Die meisten aller als Schorlomit bezeichneten Granate sind keine Schorlomite, sondern schwarze Ti-Andradite, resp. Melanite; nach neuerer Auffassung auch Mischungen aus Ti-Andradit und Schorlomit. Schorlomite benötigen zu ihrer Bildung einen relativ hohen Anteil an Titan. Schwarze Granate in Feldspäten, Nephelin-Syeniten oder Alkalipegmatiten ohne reichliche Imprägnation von rotbraunen oder schwarzen Ti-Oxiden sind in den allermeisten Fällen Ti-haltige Andradite. Die in vielen Sammlungen befindlichen sogenannten "Schorlomite" aus dem Hohen Atlas in Marokko sind in Realität Ti-Andradite.

Die kanadischen Wissenschaftler A.R. Chakhmouradian und C.A. McCammon (2005) haben Schorlomite aus Ijoliten von Magnet Cove und aus Silico-Carbonatiten von Afrikanda mittels Elektronen-Mikrosonde und Wasserstoff, Röntgendiffraktion und Mößbauer-Spektroskopie analysiert, um die Komplexität der Substitutionsmechanismen in Ti-reichen Granaten aufzuzeigen. Zuzüglich zur predomonierenden Schorlomit-Komponente enthalten die untersuchten Kristalle dieser Arbeit signifikante (>15 mol.%) Anteile von Andradit und Morimotoit. Die Bedeutung der genauen quantitativen Bestimmung und Zuordnung von Fe, Ti und anderen Kationen wird weiterhin diskutiert.
