Der Name stammt vom Erstfundort: Tonale Pass (Passo del Tonale), Adamello, Alto Adige, Südtirol, Italien. Benannt wurde das Gestein 1864 vom deutschen Mineralogen und Geologen Gerhard vom Rath.
