4,3 Mio. Einwohner. Swerdlowsk ist der frühere Name von Jekaterinburg. Jekaterinburg umgibt der Oblast Swerdlowsk. Er ist der Oblast mit der größten Bevölkerungszahl im asiatischen Teil Russlands. Er liegt am O-Abhang des Uralgebirges und greift auf das westsibirische Tiefland über. Die wichtigsten Städte neben der Hauptstadt Jekaterinburg sind Nischni Tagil, Kamensk-Uralski, Perwouralsk, Serow, Nowouralsk, Asbest und Irbit.

Faltengebirgsbildung mit starken tektonischen Verwerfungen und nachfolgenden hydrothermalen Vererzungen sowie sedimentäre Ablagerungen. Der Oblast ist reich an Bodenschätzen wie Erdöl, Gold oder Platin. Bergbau, Maschinenbau und Metallverarbeitung zählen zu den wichtigsten Wirtschaftszweigen (siehe dazu auch unter Geologie Ural)

Detailed Description

Neben den viele und duch zahlreiche Aufschlüsse gefundenen Mineralien ist der Malachit zu den bekannesten Vorkommen zu zählen (siehe dazu auch unter: http://www.mineralienatlas.de/lexikon/index.php/Mineralienportrait/Malachit), da die Verwendung in bedeutenen Bauwerken z.B. die Isaak-Kathedrale und das Winterpalais in Sankt Petersburg für einen hohen Bekanntheitsgrad gesorgt hat. Kaum bekannt sind die mehr als 100 Achatvorkommen besonders nördlich und südlich von Swerdlowsk (Jekaterinburg). In einem 1982 erschienenen Buch "Agate" sind die bekanntesten Fundstellen des mittleren Ural beschrieben. Die Achate wurden dabei in allen bekannten Variationen (Farbnuancen und Achattypen) sowie Bildungsbedingungen angetroffen. Weitere Begleitminerale dieser Achatfundstellen sind die Quarzminerale: Amethyst, Chalcedon, Rauchquarz und Jaspis.
