Geology

Uruguay ist relativ arm an Bodenschätzen, verfügt über keine eigenen Erdölvorkommen und auch Minerallagerstätten sind nur vereinzelt anzutreffen. Abgebaut werden aber verschiedene Massenrohstoffe, wie Kalkstein für die Produktion von Zement, oder (besonders im S des Landes) Tone und tonreiche Schluffe für Ziegel. Neben Dolomit und Marmor wird besonders in den SO Departements auch der sogenannte „Schwarze Granit“ als Naturwerkstein abgebaut. Gold ist das wichtigste Mineral in der Export-Bilanz.
