VEI

Vulkanischer Explosions-Index (Volcanic Explosivity Index )

Ein Maß, welches die Heftigkeit und Größe, das Volumen des Ausbruchs (Magnitude) und die Höhe der Eruptionswolke (Intensität) eines Vulkanausbruchs bestimmt. Der VEI beruht auf mehreren Faktoren, um klassifiziert zu werden, wie das Volumen des eruptierten pyroklastischen Materials (Asche, pyroklastische Ströme und andere Ejekta), Höhe der Ausbruchswolke, Dauer der Eruption in Stunden und qualitativ beschreibende Kriterien.

  • 0 Effusiv: Eruptionswolke bis 100 m, hawaiianisch; Ausbruch täglich. Bsp. Kilauea (Hawaii)
  • 1 Mild: Eruptionswolke bis 1000 m, strombolianisch, Ausbruch täglich; Bsp.: Stromboli
  • 2 Explosiv: Eruptionswolke 1-5 km, strombolianisch-vulkanianisch; 1 x wöchentlich, Bsp.: Galeras 1992
  • 3 Heftig: Eruptionswolke 5-15 km, vulkanianisch; 1 x jährlich, Bsp.: Ruiz
  • 4 Kataklysmisch: Eruptionswolke 10-25 km, vulkanianisch-plinianisch; 1 x pro Jahrzehnt; Bsp.: Galunggung 1982
  • 5 Paroxysmal: Eruptionswolke > 25 km, plinianisch; 1 x pro Jh.; Vesuv 79 n.Chr.; Mount St. Helens 1980; El Chichon, Mexiko 1982, Pinatubo 1991
  • 6 Kolossal: Eruptionswolke >25 km; plinianisch; 1 x pro Jh.,Bsp.: Krakatau 1883
  • 7 Super-Kolossal: Eruptionswolke > 25 km; ultraplinianisch; 1 x pro Jhtsd: Bsp.: Tambora, Indonesien, 1815, Long Valley Caldera v. 760.000 Jahren
  • 8 Mega-Kolossal: Eruptionswolke > 25 km; ultraplinianisch; 1 x in 10.000 Jahren; Bsp.: Yellowstone ( vor 600.000 Jahren)
